A new trend in weight loss is the low carbs diet. A low carbohydrate diet means limiting your overall carbohydrate intake and increasing your proteins and fat. The South Beach Diet is a low carbs diet that became popular in the late 90s. This diet restricts saturated fats and most types of carbohydrates. Carbs are added slowly over the course of the diet, with saturated fats added in the final phase. The first phase of the diet, the restriction phase, lasts two weeks. After the first two weeks the dieter is allowed to add food back in, with advice about which carbs are best to eat to continue weight loss. There are lists of foods to avoid and foods that the dieter is encouraged to eat during phase two, which is complete when the dieter has met their weight loss goal. The last phase is the maintenance phase, at which time the dieters are encouraged to eat the appropriate carb level to maintain their weight. Dieters can go back to phase one and two if needed.

These diets are all based on the reduction of carbohydrates in the diet, but have different phases, foods to eat and supplements to take. No matter what kind of low carbohydrate diet you choose, the goal is ultimately healthy weight loss and the maintaining of a healthy weight.
